I love seeing small films nobody knows exist and I hardly know anything about. Those movies you only hear about just because of an actor you like are in it or it’s an early work from some director or screenwriter you find interesting. Many of them are pointless and/or really bad, but the chase is great and sometimes you can find the greatest pieces of gold (which you’ll later force on your friends and hope they’ll understand.)
The biggest problems with this kind of love? Well, for starters small films often cost a whole lot more that the average movie and you’ll have to spend a small fortune just to get them shipped home from wherever you can find them. That have seldom stopped me though.. It’s not like I have better things to spend my money on.
Another big problem is if you want to get hold of a film that a) came before the dvd-era and haven’t been released other than on VHS or whatever, or b) haven’t got any distribution behind it yet. When it comes to indie-flicks that shit can take years and there is always a risk it won’t see the light of day in ages - or ever.
It’s point b that brings me to todays subject; What we do is secret.
Plot: Biopic that chronicles the tumultuous life of iconoclastic singer/songwriter Darby Crash and his band, The Germs, a seminal and pioneering force in the Los Angeles punk rock scene from 1977 to 1980. Darby had a five year plan to become a legend, which included committing suicide, which he did in December of 1980, the day before John Lennon was assasinated. (Trailer)
I first heard about this movie when I started my Bijou Phillips fanlisting back in 2005. My interest really peaked when the trailer came out in the beginning of 06’ and it’s been one major painful wait since then, while they’ve been trying to find distribution and whatnot.
I haven’t been anticipating a movie as much as this one since my search for My Own Private Idaho back in the day. A search which went on for many many years. (Now I’m owner of scripts, an american vhs-tape, one english - which I actually can watch - and the dvd;). From being ‘a movie a want to see’ What we do is secret have been moved over to the ‘things-to-do-before-I-die’-list. I mean, it doesn’t even really matter if it’s any good anymore. I’ll be really glad if it is, but I’m sooo over that part (and I don't give a fuck anymore that Shane West plays Darby. Heard he's good, that's fine by me.). Just release the damn movie so I can see it and - in worst case scenario - put it behind me and move on!
Things are finally starting to look up though! A new trailer was released no too long ago:
Not as good as the first one, which I must have watched a hundred times by now. Okay, maybe the beginning is better, but the end-part in the first trailer is fucking beautiful. Whatever, new footage! I didn't think I could be more excited for this one, but I proved myself wrong, lol.
And what else? Well, according to Shane West in this interview they have found distribution and have a theatrical release set for August!! Maybe to good to be true, but at least shit is happening!
